Fishing reports from Playa Zancudo

September 22, 2003:  September Fishing Report and News

Well Mother Nature fooled us again; typically a longer and wetter rainy season follows El Nino. This year is shaping up to be the exception to the rule. We have been getting great weather with rains coming at night. The waters have been calm and the current in closer to shore.  Unfortunately there has been very little Sportfishing action.

The local fishermen stop by every day to sell fish. They are telling us that inshore bottom fishing is as strong as ever, and the contents of their coolers are testimony to the claims. One fisherman spoke of large schools of tuna running with the porpoise right off the rock of Matapalo. The schools were of large yellowfin Tuna not the school yellows we usually see there.

Recently I took trip over to Playa Blanca, returning at night. There was a radiant full moon and I could see for miles. Phosphorescence was ablaze in the water. The phosphorescence is the biochemical illumination of dinoflagellate algae native to tropical seas.  While cruising back to Playa Zancudo a large pod of porpoise came upon the boat. We came to a stop in awe as the jumping and spinning porpoise put on a show around the boat.  Every time a porpoise leapt a trail of green/ blue phosphorescent light traced the animals flight, an explosion of phosphorescence marking its reentry.  Hundreds of the porpoise swam and jumped playfully around the boat for over an hour, leaving my passenger and me speechless as we witnessed the spectacle. I wondered if the porpoise were playing in the phosphorescencee. . .

When visiting Zancudo one can see and enjoy the phosphorescence from the beach. The surf comes in as if it was a glow. The swimmers are awash with the phosphorescence. Another great memory to take home from Playa Zancudo

For the first time in Arena Alta Sportfishing history I turned away a booking for this year due to lack of availability.  To date there are 15 parties with tentative reservations, I must inform all of you that I cannot hold dates anymore, and the remaining dates available are going to be filled on a first come first served basis. I hope to be able to accommodate all, but that can only happen with firm commitments. Sansa is also becoming a real issue, so if you are planning a trip lets get the ball rolling.

To better communicate, Arena Alta Sportfishing has a new toll-free number in the U.S.

Please feel free to use it
